Kenrick — A Conversation with Kenrick Mark Coleman Features Richard Holder
1. Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Richard Holder. I don’t consider myself a photographer. I like to think of myself more as an artist, because it’s a broader term used to describe a creative individual. I’ve been creating art from the age of 5. Unlike many people who discover what they want to be in life at a later age, I was born with the desire to do what I do _ hence creativity comes naturally and brings me lots of joy. I was formally trained in Photography in Dallas, Texas at the University of North Texas and graduated with a BFA in Photography in 1997.
2. You are the Founder/Owner of Richard Holder Photography. What do you believe is important in this your role?
I am here to capture, in my lifetime, a collection of images that will embody an era of Belize commercially, artistically and historically.
3. Tell us more about Richard Holder Photography. Why did you establish this business? Why types of products/ services do you have available?
I concentrate mainly on creating image about people, but I have also created various product and architectural images. I enjoy the social aspect of people photography, and that’s why I gravitate more towards this category. We do corporate portraits, family portraits, weddings, fashion and glamour and various other commercial photography.
4. There are many Photography businesses in Belize. What makes Richard Holder Photography stands out? What aspect of your business do clients prefer best?
My clients prefer best the all-round quality of the work and the experience of working with RH. [Professionalism and vision honed with years of experience _ it’s smooth sailing!]
5. There are many substances which makes photography unique and prestigious. What do you have to say about this scenario?
Substances?! Maybe a healthy breakfast …it’s important that the photographer has fuel and rest for the day ahead! “Prestigious” perhaps if it’s made with loving hands!
6. What are the challenges of your business? Opportunities?
The advent of Facebook and digital cameras have spawned many so-called new photographers in Belize. This influx of overnight photographers has helped distinguish the work of more seasoned photographers as myself, but it has also affected the concept that professional photography is a craft and not an overnight epiphany!
7. Describe a photo shoot with Richard Holder, from appointment to make-up to the after moments.
It’s probably better not to describe an experience best left experienced! All I’d like to say is that when we take on an assignment, regardless of the category, we ensure that our clients are pleased with every aspect of doing business with us. We like people to feel assured that their images will be great, in our hands. Fortunately, with digital photography, we can share the results in real time, during a photo shoot.
8. Why should Belizeans contact you for that ever radiant photo shoot? How can they contact?
Our reputation as image makers has been built on creating consistently vibrant, high quality images. In this case, I prefer if the work speaks for itself. We have online portfolios and can also be contacted via : Facebook (ww.facebook.com/rhphotobelize), our official website (www.rhphotobelize.com) and our jump site ( www.richardholder.com)! We’re also on Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin and your local yellow pages.
9. What advice do you have for upcoming photographers?
The man behind the camera is more important that the machine in his hands.
10. What three words do you have to say to young Belizeans?
In the current chaotic condition of the world, don’t lose sight or let anyone or anything derail you from the path of your dreams. Don’t let digital devices eclipse your experiences of life_ sometimes, put down the smart phones, leave all the social media alone and clear your mind. It’s with a clear mind that you will discover more about yourself than randomly scavenging the abyss of the internet. Respect each other and respect mother nature.
