Letter from Kenrick Mark

Dear Esteemed Readers,

I woke early Monday morning! I opened my window, and fresh breeze rushed in! It was very cold now. I logged in to my email and social media. I had a conversation with our Belizean Chevening cohort — Andrew, Andrea, Giselle and Phylicia. We spoke about the ongoing academics — all the classes, and assignments we had and of course, any updates in our new home cities and of course, Belize. We usually messaged each other daily or sometimes, weekly. I believe we were a very close set of Cheveners. We bonded well. I did mentioned to them that sometimes (especially when I was in my room), I felt sad, always thinking about home and family. They said it’s a natural feeling for everyone at various points in your tenure. The primary focus is to keep too busy — run a schedule and just live in every moment.

I forgot to mention that in the first week of September, I met via social media some Belizeans living in Great Britain. I introduced myself, and also asked them about life in the UK. I remember Johnny, Carlton, Carolyn, Bill, Mirtha, Joel, Thomas, Joris, Carrie, Jay, and a few others. They were all warm, loving human beings. Mirtha visited me before when she came to Belize, and Jay recently stopped by. I met Joel, Carlton, and Carolyn in 2010 (via social media) while enrolled in projects for my predecessor charity, Teens Belize Organization. Carlton is a part — time model in his locale, and I also selected him for an exclusive interview in 2016. He also appeared on The Look — which was a model feature project I spearheaded. I kept in touch with them during my year in London.

After my morning conversations, I arranged my room. I planned to wash during the night when I returned from class. I showered and got dressed. I went to the Nepal guy store to pursue my Western Union transaction. Thankfully, he was not busy, and it was done in 5 minutes. He was a wonderful and caring human being too. He always asked about my life so far in London, and offered to help in any way. Hopefully, when I visit London again, I will be able to meet up with them, and the Asian couple from Alacosta Coffee. Actually, I found out a few weeks ago that the Alacosta Coffee Shop has been closed. I hope I get to have dinner with them one day soon (when I visit Europe) (smiling). On my way back, I stopped in at Alacosta Coffee, and was greeted with lovely salutations, and ‘personalized’ smiles. I ordered a hot chocolate this time, and some breakfast — toast with butter, eggs, and avocado. I enjoyed this healthy breakfast, and the hot drink was AMAZING!

I went to the library to continue my paper analysis, which was due November end. I was very careful as this was my final grade. I spent the entire morning and afternoon, reading and writing, and developing my critical analysis. Of course, I had a bag of sweet and savory snacks including Reeses peanut butter chocolate cups, chicken sandwich, crackers, bananas, white chocolate chip cookies, and of course, water. I always took breaks every hour, to relieve any stress.

I walked to class around 4am. I met a few of my classmates at school. They were discussing some projects too. I took the elevator up and waited for our Professor to reach. She was always on time. It was a full fledged class. We discussed more examples of papers and how to critical analyze them. We spoke about our progress and the challenges we had with our final paper too. She guided us, and provided context and further academic sources to utilize. I was grateful for this class.

It was a very dark, cold evening as I walked out the main entrance of the Queen Mary building. Some of my classmates walked along with me to board the DLR (which was next door Cutty Sark Halls). I heard them talking about travelling around the UK too. That must be super exciting!

I bought 2 chicken sandwiches, 2 portion of fries, and a soda at McDonalds. I enjoyed my dinner while watching cooking shows. I also spoke to my comrade from Belize City.

I fell asleep later on.

I’m quite exhausted for tonight. I will continue my journey in a next edition of Letter from Kenrick Mark.

Sincerely yours,

Kenrick Mark
