Letter from Kenrick Mark

Dear Esteemed Readers,

December arrived, and of course, I saw many businesses, homes, and public arenas displaying their Christmas decors from late November. I loved to gaze at all the gorgeous, matchless and creative Christmas traditional displays and decorations. I remember visiting the malls, or parks, and carefully watching every inch of the Christmas tree, and the duly fitted Christmas ornaments and colorful lights. I was surely overjoyed to be celebrating Christmas in England! I remember reading Sam Selvon’s A Brighter Sun in high school. The characters in the book always spoke greatly of moving from the Caribbean to the USA and UKGB. I was truly living my childhood dream — attaining the Chevening scholarship, pursuing my Master’s degree, majoring in Public Relations, and living in England. Oh my, dreams do come true!

I woke up around 7am, arranged my room, and took a shower. I made Maple and Brown Sugar oatmeal, with lots of milk. I went on the BBC website to watch the news in the UK, and the world, while having breakfast. After about an hour, I went to the library. Throughout the day, I kept reading articles, and watching required Public Relations/Communication videos. Of course, I took my bag of snacks, both sweet and savory, and enjoyed them during the day. I met with Ervin and Georgia in the afternoon, to finalize our presentation for Wednesday, December 2nd. I struggled somewhat for this presentation — understanding my theories and explanations. I went to our university cafe to finalize our work.

I went for a walk in the evening around the historic Greenwich area. The sun was shining in the early afternoon, but it got very cold in the evening. I enjoyed the architecture and the very European styles of the buildings. There were a few modern designs too. There was actually a hotel and restaurant next door our library. It looked very exclusive! I usually saw families walking into the restaurant on Sundays. There was also a very full, dynamic bookstore and stationery store behind the library. I have been in the book store a couple times. I just browsed around.

I walked back to my room. I went to watch a movie. I was tired from the entire day of presentation preparation and the readings. Later on, I came downstairs and went to McDonalds to purchase two chicken sandwiches, two portion of fries, and a Sprite drink. I always saw a few of my schoolmates or hall mates purchasing food from there too. I didn’t knew them personally, but I’ve seen their faces around. There were always people at the train station too, some entering and some coming out. Once, a lady walked up to me, and asked for money. She looked scary. I quickly walked away. There was a huge, well crafted map of the London underground tube, which has helped me a few times. I loved these well defined maps!!! There were map hubs all over London, in various areas — on streets, at the stations, at schools, everywhere! I saw a few people having beers and conversations at the pub downstairs my student halls.

I watched some attention-grabbing cooking shows while eating dinner. I remember watching foods from the Caribbean, and then, from Italy, and USA. I really loved Laura in the Kitchen and The Domestic Geek.

I went to sleep around 10pm.

I’m quite exhausted for tonight. I will continue my journey in a next edition of Letter from Kenrick Mark.

Sincerely yours,

Kenrick Mark
