Letter from Kenrick Mark

Dear Esteemed Readers,

On Thursday morning, I slept in. I woke up around 830am. I relaxed in bed, reflecting on my presentation, and my tenure in England so far. I remembered stepping out of the black cab, the cab driver giving me my luggage bag, and looking up at the main Cutty Sark Hall building. I was thinking silently ‘I made it’ (and sighed in relief). The early moments were all new and inside me was exploding with verve. I remember adapting to the time difference (Belize versus England).

I took a shower later and had breakfast. I toasted 3 slices of soft white bread with that ever delectable Clover branded butter. I packed up a bag of snacks — chocolates, Biscoff cookies, water, crackers, and fruits. I also quickly checked my school bag, placing my laptop inside, along with some other key stuffs. I grabbed my army green winter coat, ensured I had all my cards (bank cards, Cutty Sark Halls student card (for main entrance), university ID, and Belizean IDs) and walked out my room. I locked my door (interestingly, I think all room doors had the same key), and took my grand daily walk from my room, then opened the flat door, walked down the stairs, and into the main building. There were three main doors in this building — one to enter, and the other two to exit. I usually go through the side exit door, as it leads to the high street directly. The main building was usually quiet, minus a few times when students or employees were having conversations. There was a receptionist in the day, and a security personnel at night and on weekends/holidays. I noticed once that a security had on a turban which symbolized he was a practicing Sikh (Sikhism). It was my first time in real life seeing this. I also applaud the tolerance and diversity in the UK. It is the true epitome of humanity.

I walked down the high street unto the library. It was buzzing with activity — people walking around, many purchasing from the local convenience outlets, souvenir shops, and of course, some were having breakfast at the coffee shops around. There were taxi cabs in the street, lorries, and of course, the very popular red deck buses. I crossed the street and walked up to the library. I walked in, as the entrance doors slid open (it had motion sensors). I went up to the first floor near the PR books section. I began to read some articles (which I had not been able to finish some weeks ago). In the afternoon, I began to browse my assignment objectives for my Thursday class. I also took my regular hour breaks, for snacks, free elevator rides, and new book sightings.

We also had our final planning and communication class in the evening. I walked down past the vintage market and the Pizza restaurant, then upwards the Jaime Oliver restaurant. I arrived at the same time as my classmates. Our Professor Christian arrived shortly after, and class began. He explained several theories in depth as it related to our planning paper. Some of my classmates also asked questions. The first half of the class was in the King William building and we always walked over to the Stephen Lawrence building to complete the other half. I enjoyed walking from the King William building to the Stephen Lawrence building in the gorgeous well kept lawns in the cold, winter evenings of London. We discussed many examples in planning and relative development of a communication/public relations paper.

I walked home after class. The Cutty Sark ship was lighted up with dazzling, colored lights. It called. After all, it was the Christmas season.

While walking home, I stopped in at McDonalds. I bought 2 chicken sandwiches, 2 portion of French fries, and a soda. It was a busy night at the fast food outlet. I saw many familiar faces from my student halls in the queue purchasing meals.

I went home and enjoyed my dinner, while watching cooking shows.

I’m quite exhausted for tonight. I will continue my journey in a next edition of Letter from Kenrick Mark.

Sincerely yours,

Kenrick Mark
